Colourful Eco Shoes

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Who says that eco shoes have to be boring? There seems to be some preconceived that anything eco friendly in terms of fashion is going to be hippyish lacking in colour and just a bit dull. This is definitely not the case with new tecqniques used in the manufacturing of eco fashion being developed all of the time and some great eco shoe brands which manage to balance the need for style, comfort and sustainability so well.

We are loving the colourful range of eco shoes available from Spartoo on  a range of very desireable colours. they are made from sustainable materials including vegetable tanned leather which elimates the harmful chemicals and heavy metals which are used in the traditional process of tanning leather.

These boots are great for brightening up a plain old pair of jeans and adding a bit of colour to your day.

Recyclus Gygy- these bright and fun shoes by El Naturalista are completely biodegradable and 50% of the soles are made from biodegradable materials.

Inua Malada - this colourful patchwork design by Think is made manually and is completely biodegradable.

Two - these ontrend boots by Airstep not only work incredibly well with the seasons folk trend, but are also made of vegetable tanned leather will a gel insert for maximum comfort.

New social site theshoppingforecast.com to cut waste in the fashion industry

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Theshoppingforecast.com has recently launched with a focus on cutting waste in the fashion industry by allowing retailers to make more accurate predictions on fashions and trends for the season ahead. The site will be the first of its kind to offer detailed information on customer preferences including by age, location and a number of other demographics based on user activity through a social site

Theshoppingforecast.com is an interactive site where users can vote, rate, comment, share, win and make outfits using pieces of clothing for the season ahead that have been picked out by the Style Council, a team of fashion enthusiasts. The site will provide information to retail buyers on preferences relating to various demographics whilst keeping data protection for the users as an upmost priority and not revealing any of it’s users details to third parties.

The site represents a significant step forward in the reduction of waste in the fashion industry which should not only represent financial savings for retailers but also greater customer satisfaction and environmental sustainability.

Site Founder Matthew Murfin commented ‘We are really pleased to offer a solution to the ever growing problem of waste in the fashion industry. The Shopping Forecast provides a win: win scenario for everyone involved. Shoppers get the opportunity to buy more of the clothes that they like, retailers can save money and improve their customer satisfaction at the same time and those concerned with the environment can help to reduce waste as well as making their preferences for sustainable fashion known by voting on The Shopping Forecast’

Theshoppingforecast.com was launched in September 2010 by Matthew Murfin with the aim of providing detailed quantitative data for fashion retail buyers as a solution to the problem of predicting trends for the season ahead. The site will provide data on style and colour preferences for women’s clothing by a wide range of parameters including age, geographic location,>. The site will not share any data on individuals with third parties.

Theshoppingforecast.com will also provide a fun and interactive social network where users can win prizes, earn incentives, share and discuss their favourite items as well as discovering what others think of what will be a hit, or not, in next season’s fashions.

The Future of Ethical Footwear

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Whilst there is plenty of talk about the environmental and ethical impact of the clothes that we wear including the use of pesticides to grow cotton, the energy intensive manufacture of synthetic fabrics and the fast fashion culture which commits thousands of tonnes of textile waste to landfill, we often forget about our shoes and footwear which is just as essential to every day life as clothing and has just as much impact.

The majority of shoes are made from either leather or synthetic materials both of which have huge environmental impacts. Leather is usually tanned using a process which causes damage to the health of the people involved and to the surrounding environment. The tanning uses chemicals including lead, zinc, formaldehyde, dyes and cyanide-based chemicals. Shoes are also often glued together using benzene which is highly toxic and damaging to the health of the workers. Synthetic materials are usually not biodegradable making them difficult to dispose of and also sometimes contain toxic chemicals like phthalates which are damaging to health and the environment in a number of ways. So how is likely is it that there will be more ethical footwear available in the future?

Well there are already a number of companies which specialise in ethical footwear and manufacture shoes using a variety of materials and methods which have a lesser impact on the environment. Po Zu Ethical Footwear makes shoes using a variety of natural materials including cork, organic hemp, natural latex, coconut husk and vegetable tanned leather.  They using stitching instead of glue to make the shoes and the factory follows strict ethical guidelines. The shoes are made to for comfort and durability so that they should have a long life span but when their useful life is over they easily biodegrade.

Brands like Po-Zu are taking big steps forward in the manufacture of ethical footwear but there is still a long way to go in finding the perfect ethical and eco friendly material to make the shoes from. Whilst vegan shoes made of materials like hemp and cork are both incredibly sustainable, they are unlikely to ever replace leather which is favoured for its appearance and durability. Vegetable tanned leather is a better alternative than conventionally tanned leather but still has an environmental impact associated with the rearing of animals and for many there are ethical issues surrounding the welfare of the animals.

One of the changes that would help the growth of ethical footwear would be change in attitude to the buying of footwear. Footwear can be considered as part of the ‘fast fashion culture’ and ‘throw away society’ where low cost shoes are purchased in line with the current trends and thrown away after a few wears. The second hand market for shoes is even less than with clothes. If people could consider an investment which they will keep for many years to come then they may not mind paying a little extra to ensure both quality and that the shoes have been ethically manufactured. The longer life span of shoes would then cut down on waste.

There are a number of potential materials that could be used to make ethical footwear and shoes in the future although there is still some way to go before these materials become completely commercially viable. The ideal material would need to be strong, breathable, durable and look great when made into shoes.

Fish leather is one possible solution. It is made using fish skin which is a by product of the fish industry and it is also really strong. The tanning process also does not use toxic chemicals. At the moment, it is mainly used for products like purses. Ocean leather is another possible solution which is made from kelp but is still in the very early stages of development.

Why choose vegetarian and vegan shoes?

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Vegetarian or vegan shoes are made using materials that are not derived from any animal products. This will include leather and even the glue that is often used to fix shoes together and is made from animal bones.

People wear vegan and vegetarian shoes for a number of reasons. For some it is part of a lifestyle choice which is combined with a preference for not eating meat either due for ethical or animal welfare reasons. For others it is more about the environmental impacts that are associated with the rearing of animals whose skins are used to make the leather and the tanning of the leather which uses a cocktail of damaging chemicals. For some people the choice of vegan shoes is about the choice to live a more healthy and chemical free life.

If you choose to wear vegan and vegetarian shoes you can be sure that animal will have suffered in any way in order to produce your shoes.

But aren’t synthetic alternatives to leather damaging to the environment?

Yes many synthetic alternatives to leather have a significant environmental impact which includes the use non renewable resources (oil) to make them, the pollution caused by their manufacture and their inability to bio degrade at the end of their useful life. Whilst these alternatives may be acceptable for those who don’t wear leather shoes purely because of animal welfare, it is difficult to say whether the different aspects of their environmental impact adds up to more or less than that of leather. If you want to ensure that you are choosing the most eco friendly vegan shoes you should look for the completely natural alternatives to leather. Specialist manufactures of ethical shoes like Po-Zu vegan shoes make natural and bio degradable vegan shoes in a variety of materials including cork, natural latex, coconut husk and organic hemp.

So are vegan and vegetarian shoes as long lasting as leather shoes?

It depends on the type and style of shoe and the material that it is made from. It will also depend on how you look after the shoes. Hemp is incredibly strong and a good alternative to leather for casual shoes. It is also breathable and can be dyed many different colours. If the shoes are manufactured well and looked after they should last well.

Do vegan and vegetarian shoes look as good as leather shoes?

This is all about individual taste. Many people like the look of leather and there are some leather alternatives that look almost identical to leather. However these are usually synthetic and so not great for the environment. Other alternatives to leather include wool, hemp and cork can be made into beautiful, stylish and fashionable shoes. There are plenty of styles available so you should be able to find some that you like the look of.

Vegan and vegetarian shoes are a great way to minimise your impact on the environment aprovided that you choose natural alternatives. You should shop around for great styles that are good to look at, hard wearing and long lasting.

Theshoppingforecast.com launches, a new fashion democracy and social shopping website

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Theshoppingforecast.com, an innovative new fashion democracy and social shopping website, has just launched.

The groundbreaking new website will allow users to browse, comment, vote on and save to their own personal wardrobes, the fashions and trends for the season ahead. It is the first of its kind to highlight the key trends for the season as identified by experts, fashion enthusiasts and the public. It will also provide invaluable quantifiable information to buyers in fashion retail allowing them to make informed decisions. The website will provide ongoing quantitative information and analysis on consumer preferences of women to fashion buyers for the season ahead.

Fashion enthusiasts can register with theshoppingforecast.com for free and vote, comment and save items for their next outfit. The items on the site, which will include women’s fashion for a variety of occasions, will be carefully selected by an expert style council comprising of popular fashion bloggers, stylists and industry insiders as well as forward looking consumers of fashion. By voting on the clothes on the site, users will also have the chance to win their favourite item each month. The results of the voting and most popular items will feature in the monthly newsletter along with plenty of other information on fashion and style for the season ahead.

Matthew Murfin founder of the website commented ‘Theshoppingforecast.com is the first of its kind to give fashion enthusiasts and consumers a say in which clothes they would like to see in stores. It aims to create a fashion democracy that will be a link between female shoppers and retail buyers, so no more puffball skirts!’

Our verdict - we love the idea that by giving our input and helping to decide what clothes will be in the shops, we can help to reduce the waste of the fashion industry. It is also a great way to discover new trends.

Swap ‘Til You Drop in Manchester!

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Louise Redknapp to host ‘eve Fashion Swap’ this September.

Fashionable women from all over Manchester are being invited to pick some stylish items from their wardrobe that they can bring along to a spectacular ‘fashion swap’ event taking place at Dukes 92 in Castlefield on Wednesday15th September.  Louise Redknapp will be hosting the event.

The ‘eve Fashion Swap’, created by new drinks brand eve, has been inspired by the latest ‘swishing’ trend – the fashionistas way of updating their wardrobe for free. Ladies simply choose an item of unwanted good quality clothing, bring it along to the event and exchange it for someone else’s.

Unlike many fashion swap events, tickets are free. Anyone who’d like to come along simply needs to apply for SMS tickets by texting ‘eve Manchester’ to 82500. In return, a unique code will be sent to their phone which can be shown at the entrance to allow them access to the swap.

The doors open at 6pm, and as the last few clothes are sorted ladies can sample the new eve lychee and eve passionfruit drinks and enjoy bespoke eve cupcakes. Then once Louise Redknapp declares the swap officially open, the rail rummaging can begin. As the swap progresses organisers will be secretly placing surprise items on the rails, so there will be loads of bargains on offer for the most thorough of guests!

In between trying on clothes, the swapsters can get style advice from a celebrity stylist, and could enjoy one of the limited mini-manicures. There will also be an eve goodie bag for each attendee to take away at the end of the night.

Louise Redknapp, who is the official face of eve, says:

“It’s no secret that I absolutely adore fashion and I love shopping with friends. The eve Fashion Swap embodies this perfectly, so it’s the perfect night out for women who are serious about style. I’m sure the ladies of Manchester will share my passion for fashion and love my latest find, eve. I can’t wait to see what they bring along, I’ll definitely be having a look through the rails myself.”

The Many Uses of Hemp (including Vegan Shoes)

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Hemp is an incredibly versatile plant that can be used to make all sorts of products from clothing and shoes to rope. It can even be used for buildings. The beauty of using hemp as a replacement for a variety of different materials is that it is highly sustainable. Hemp can be grown without the need for pesticides or fertilisers making it a great alternative to cotton. Hemp is also really fast growing as it is a grass, this makes it easily renewable in contrast to timber and wood. The oil from hemp seeds contain amino acids and essential fatty acids making it a great food product but the oil is also used for a huge variety of other industrial products. The oil can even be used as an bio fuel which is a great alternative to non renewable fossil fuels.

The fibre of the hemp plant is also called bast and used to make textiles and paper. The plant typically produces 10% more fibre than either cotton or flax and is strong and quick growing. Textiles made from the hemp plant can be used to make shoes, clothing, sails and carpets. It was widely used for these purposes before the industrial revolution but its popularity then declined due to the availability of other textiles. Hemp clothing is now beginning to become popular again primarily because of sustainability of the plant. Po-zu Ecological Shoes uses hemp as an alternative to leather for manufacturing its ethical and vegan shoes.

It is hard to imagine but the strength from the hemp plant can be harnessed and used to strengthen buildings. Hempcrete, as it is known is made by mixing hemp hurds and lime. It is less brittle than concrete and therefore is more resistant to cracking reducing the need for expansion joints. Hemp has also been used in other composite materials for construction. The use of hemp in this way is really just in its infancy stage with it mostly being used for prototypes.

Hemp can also be used to make the composite panels for cars. The hemp bast fibre is mixed with fibreglass for a strong material

As well as it many other uses hemp oil, which is obtained from the fruit of the hemp plant, can be taken as a dietary supplement and has been shown to relieve the symptoms of eczema. It also has anti inflammatory properties and can be used for medical purposes.

The hemp plant is also very useful for ecological reasons. It can be used to clean waste water removing impurities like sewage. It can remove excess phosphorus from chicken effluent or other chemicals. It has even been used to clear contaminents after the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl.  The density and height that the hemp plant can grow to make it ideal for weed control. It minimises the pool of weed seeds i n the soil and is particularly useful for controlling tough weeds, helping to reduce the use of herbicides.

With its sustainability and many different uses, hemp could well be one of the crops of the future providing a partial solution to a number of environmental issues. There are however some issues surrounding the scale of hemp production which is partially limited by it status as a controlled crop in the US. With time, hopefully the production of hemp will become scalable allowing it to be used more extensively to make these many products.

Po-Zu aims to set new standards in ethical and ecological footwear manufacture with its range of vegan shoes and natural footwear that are healthy for your feet, safe for all the workers throughout the supply chain, and kind to the environment.

Lily Allen To Launch New Fashion Range

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Pop Singer Lily Allen has announced that she is to launch her new fashion business, named ‘Lucy in Disguise’, this Summer during Vintage at Goodwood Festival. She has also announced that she is turning her back on her music career to concentrate on the new business venture, which will feature vintage clothes with her sister Sarah Owen. The event is to take place over a long weekend in August this year in the grounds of the grand Goodwood Estate in West Sussex. It is to be hosted by Red or Dead founder and designer Wayne Hemmingway, and it will be the first festival of its kind to combine music, fashion, design and retail.

Lily Allen has commented in the past that she was considering the idea of taking a break from music, quoting ” To me, the idea of music and fashion being separate is just not possible- one can’t exist without the other. If you can’t find something here you are passionate about I would be very surprised!” The festival will also have its own ‘High Street’- which will contain temporary pop-up shops from the likes of The Body Shop, John Lewis, and Oxfam, as well as hair salons where stylists will recreate styles from past eras. There will also be a ‘Vintage Marketplace’, where vintage lovers will be able to browse around and shop in their own personal heaven! A main music stage will play host to several live acts, including Sandie Shaw, who will be performing for the first time in 20years.

It seems Lily Allen wants to take a serious shot at her fashion business, hence why she is retiring from music. It looks like her range will be a massive success, working under guidance of Wayne Hemmingway who has already been a huge success in the vintage market. “The thing I love about vintage is that it is incredibly well-made,” says Lily- “it lasts forever!”

What’s on offer – mini pamper sessions (by various local pamper professionals), mini tarot card readings by Samantha New-Fielding (of Newphoria, www.newphoria.co.uk) and mini clothing workshops by Sarah Brummitt - Image Consultant (http://www.sarahbrummitt.com/), Catherine Counihan of Yummy Mummy Tummy (www.yummymummytummy.co.uk) and Lynn Witten, District Manager of Arbonne (http://beautyinsideoutuk.myarbonne.co.uk).

The number of items you have brought to a swish will be written on your tag/token which you must hang on to until the end of the event (I’ll make sure it’s easy to attach to something so that you don’t have to walk around with it in your hand!). Give the tag/token back to me (or the person at reception) at the end of the event (or whenever you wish to leave) when you have chosen the items you would like to take home with you. This is done in an effort to keep the exchange as fair as possible.
Please note: There is a very slight chance you might not find anything at a swish that you like but in my experience the chances of that are pretty slim. The key to a good swish is down to the number of women who attend. The more women that come the more choice there will be … so bring all your friends!

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
